About Us
Our History
Second Chance for Pets is a not-for-profit organization started
in 1998 and made up of volunteers, most of whom have full-time jobs
outside of the organization. We constantly strive to find suitable
adoptive homes for our animals, through ads and pictures placed
in the local newspapers, and on the Petfinder website. Because of
this, hundreds of animals have been saved and have avoided death
by euthanasia. We also rely on good foster homes to care for animals
from the shelter until permanent homes can be found, so we are always
in need of volunteers and good foster families. We pay for vet care
for any shelter animal or foster care animal that has need, and
furnish distemper vaccinations to all animals in the shelter and
foster homes. We also pay for internet service and maintain this
website, so that the animals can have as much exposure to future
adoptive homes as possible.
Who We Work with:
We work closely with DeWitt County Animal Shelter, Animal Control,
the DeWitt County Vet Administrator, as well as local and surrounding
high kill shelters. We are not limited to DeWitt County only.
Local veternarians we use include Town and Country in Normal, Northgate
in Decatur, Timber Crest in Atlanta, and Covenant in Clinton. We
would like to extend our appreciation to these vets for helping
us out!
Our Adoption Process
There are several steps in our adoption process, the first of which
is submitting an application. After
your application is reviewed, the next steps in the adoption process
are as follows:
- Personal Reference checks
- Vet checks
- Pet introductions if multi-pet household
- Home check includes tour of home and where pet will be
kept while unattended, where pet will be exercised, food planned
to feed, crating recommendations, etc.
- Verification with landlords that specific pet can live there
verbal and/or written
- Verification with home owners carriers that the specific breed
is not excluded from coverage (applies to Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers,
German Shepherd, Chow Chows, etc.)
Our adoption process is designed to ensure that our pets are going
to safe, loving homes where they will be adequately cared for and
trained.
New adoptive family pet education and training when needed ---
were only a call away and weve dealt with every possible
behavioral issue imaginable and if we cannot help we will find someone
who can
